Why We Chose Acrylic — And Why It Makes All the Difference
We could have chosen any medium. We chose acrylic because of what it can do that nothing else can: build real, physical depth.
Layer by layer, our artists apply acrylic paint by hand — each coat adding dimension, texture, and richness until the portrait is no longer flat. It has weight. It has presence. From across the room, people stop and say: is that a painting or a photograph? Up close, they reach out and touch it, because they can see the texture and want to feel it.
That's not something you can achieve with a print. It's not something AI can generate. It comes from weeks of handwork, and it shows.
Step 1 — You Send Us Your Photo
Everything begins with you. After placing your order, you upload a photo of your pet — ideally clear, well-lit, and facing the camera. Natural light gives us the most to work with: the exact shade of their coat, the particular way their eyes catch the light, the subtle markings that make them unmistakably themselves.
Not sure if your photo is good enough? Send it anyway. Our artists have worked with hundreds of photos over the years — from professional shots to blurry phone snaps taken at just the right moment. We'll review your photo after you order and reach out if we need anything different.

Step 2 — We Study Your Pet
Before a single brushstroke goes down, our artists spend real time with your photo. Not glancing at it. Studying it.
The structure of their face. The direction their fur grows. The specific quality of their expression — the thing that makes the people who love them say that's exactly them when they see the finished portrait.
This is the invisible work. The part nobody sees. And it's the part that separates a portrait that looks like a pet from a portrait that looks like your pet. A golden retriever and a border collie require completely different approaches. A Persian cat and a domestic shorthair are entirely different subjects. We never apply a formula. We respond to what's actually there.
Step 3 — The First Layers Go Down
The base layers are where your pet's portrait begins to take shape — foundational colours, rough forms, the skeleton of what will eventually emerge. At this stage it doesn't look like much. That's completely normal, and it's part of why this process takes the time it does.
We work wet on dry: each layer is allowed to set fully before the next one goes on. This disciplined approach is what creates the signature depth of a Waglow portrait — genuine three-dimensionality that you can see from across a room and feel with your fingertips.

Step 4 — The Detail Work Begins
This is where most of our time goes. And where the portrait comes alive.
Fur texture is built up stroke by stroke — fine brushwork following the exact direction of growth, strand by strand, until the surface reads as real. Colour is refined. Shadows are deepened. Highlights are placed exactly where they fall in your photo.
The eyes come last. Always the eyes. They're the moment when a collection of painted layers becomes, unmistakably, your pet looking back at you. We take our time with them.
This is why a Waglow portrait takes 2–3 weeks. Not because we're slow — because doing this properly takes as long as it takes. We'd rather spend the time and get it right than rush and deliver something ordinary. You'll feel that difference the moment you open the box.
Step 5 — Finishing & Quality Check
When the painting is complete, we don't ship it. Not yet.
We step back. We compare it to your photo, side by side. We check the likeness, the colour accuracy, the proportions, the overall feel. If anything doesn't meet the standard we hold every Waglow portrait to, we go back in and refine it — however long that takes.
Only when we're satisfied does it move to the next stage. Then it's sealed with a protective finish that preserves the paint and gives the portrait its final depth — and prepared for packaging.
Step 6 — Packaging & Dispatch
A portrait that arrives damaged is a failure, however beautiful it was before it left us. We take packaging as seriously as we take painting.
Every Waglow portrait is wrapped in protective materials, boxed carefully, and dispatched with full tracking so you can follow it on its journey to you. When it arrives, it's ready to be opened, displayed, and kept.
We ship to the UK, US, Australia, Canada, and across Europe — including Germany, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, and more. Wherever you are, your portrait will reach you in the same condition it left our studio.

Can you paint multiple pets in one portrait?
Yes. Just let us know when ordering and we'll confirm the sizing and pricing. Multi-pet portraits take a little longer, but they're some of the most meaningful pieces we create.

A print is a photograph reproduced on a surface. Our portraits are painted entirely by hand, in real acrylic, over 2–3 weeks.
